I have been dressing Baton Rouge women for gameday since 2015, and I can tell you the hardest part is never the purple and gold. It is the weather. A noon kickoff in September and a night game in November are two completely different wardrobes, and the outfit that works for the stadium rarely works for the tailgate you are standing in beforehand.
Here is how I actually break it down for clients.
The 90-degree noon kickoff
September in Louisiana does not negotiate. The goal is to look pulled together in fabrics that will forgive you.
- A lightweight top in white, ivory, or cream — it photographs better than pure purple in harsh midday sun and lets your accessories do the work.
- A denim short or a flowy skirt over a comfortable sandal. Save the boots for later in the season.
- Gold jewelry instead of a heavy purple print. A statement earring and a stack of bangles read as gameday without committing you to a costume.
- A structured straw or canvas tote big enough for a clear stadium bag inside it.
The mistake I see most: heavy fabrics and closed shoes. You will regret both by the second quarter.
The perfect 70-degree afternoon game
This is the weekend everyone waits for, and it is the easiest to dress.
- A white or gold denim short or a pair of clean jeans.
- A purple or printed top with some structure — a sleeveless blouse, a fitted knit, something with a little detail at the shoulder.
- A flat mule, a sneaker, or a low boot.
- One good belt. It is the single most underrated gameday accessory and it makes a simple outfit look styled.
The cold November night game
Layers, but flattering layers.
- Dark denim, ideally a straight or wide leg you can wear with a boot — our FRAME and MOTHER fits are where most clients land.
- A cashmere or knit sweater as the base layer, not the outer layer.
- A jacket you actually like — a suede or shearling-trimmed piece, a blazer, a faux fur collar. This is the one item people will see in every photo, so it is worth investing in.
- A tall or ankle boot and a crossbody bag so your hands are free.
Tailgate versus stadium
If you are tailgating before the game, dress for the ground you will stand on. Grass, gravel, and mud end delicate shoes. I tell clients to wear the boot or the sneaker to the tailgate and keep the outfit simple enough that a jacket change transforms it for kickoff.
Three rules that never fail
- Pick one purple piece, not three. Gold and neutrals carry the rest.
- Fit beats fabric. A well-fitting white jean in your size will always look better than a trendy piece a size off.
- Buy the jacket. In Baton Rouge you will wear it every October and November weekend for a decade.
